The idol of Mahakaleshwar is known to be dakshinamurthi, which means that it is facing the south. This is a unique feature, upheld by the tantric shivnetra tradition to be found only in Mahakaleshwar among the 12 Jyotirlingas. The idol of Omkareshwar Mahadev is consecrated in the sanctum above the Mahakal shrine.
This temple is situated in the cremation area. Baglamukhi Mata is the goddess of Tantra, hence Tantric rituals have more importance here. The recognition of this temple is also high because the idol here is self-existent and awakened and this temple was established by Maharaja Yudhishthir himself.
Standing on a pile of sandstone, Gwalior Fort dominates the city and is its most important monument. It has been the site of important events, imprisonment, battles and Jauhar. A steep road leads up to the fort, with rock-carved statues of Jain Tirthankaras on either side.
